Wild thoughts
by JoAnne Sullam
Light-footed in the Forest
and Tread Lightly
Spring came early this year and I suppose this could be taken, as a sign of global warming. Early or not, as a
wildlife Artist I look forward to going out to see all that is happening in the wild. While the Rehabilitator and
Conservationist in me wonders what will happen to all the critters out there trying to make their mark in the world.
It might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the natural world.
Headlines-The Squirrel makes his mark on the world (of course unless you’ve been in endless battle with one over a
bird feeder).
Yet every living thing out there is in a competition, a race to leave a future for their kind. I am grateful for this
because it adds to the beauty and diversity of this world. That being said,
As an Artist and nature enthusiast I enjoy this season, with all its’ wonders (and not all the bugs). The Rehabilitator
and Conservationist in me though treads lightly.
So here are some tips for sharing the good earth with all that is wild.
In the garden if you find a rabbits’ nests, Eastern cottontails nests are merely shallow depressions in the ground, it
is best to leave it alone, the wild mothers will often leave the nest for long periods of time, do not touch a baby
Eastern cottontail, their protection is that they have no scent, the same goes for fawns in the wild. This is to protect
their young from predators, as they are well camouflaged..
A young fawn will intentionally stay hidden until mom comes to feed it, and even if you don’t see her you can be sure
mom is close by and watching. Birds on the other hand aren’t very good at counting and most do not rely on their sense
of smell and babies can be put back in their nest. But when in doubt call an expert. There is a list of wildlife
rehabbers at www.ravensbeard.org 845.901.0633- Ravensbeard Wildlife Center is located in Saugerties and also offers
education on our local wildlife.
Or you can ask me, JoAnne.
As Cat Stevens says ooh baby, baby it’s a wild world (The song just came on the radio, I’ll take that as a sign.)
Enjoy all that is wild and free and remember to tread lightly.
